Through regular practice students begin to awaken and enhance their own flow of Qi. Cultivation of this subtle energy develops and requires grounding and enhanced awareness. Exercises include breath work and a Qigong movement routine.

Beneficial to everyone, Qigong:

  • reduces stress
  • strengthens the immune system
  • calms as it energizes
  • improves breathing
  • increases flexibility
  • enhances performance
  • enhances mental clarity & focus

It is also highly recommended for chronic conditions such as arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and much, much more.

Instructor: Chandler Yorkhall, B.A., Cert. ABT, AOBTA received his B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College in 2000, and graduated from Centerpoint's Shiatsu Therapy Training Program in 2004. Beginning Yoga     CP#617

Wednesdays, September 3 - December 10, 2008 • 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Registration Fee: $150 • Register by August 29
Materials Fee: None.
Total Hours: 15

Participants should be healthy and capable of participating in a one-hour exercise and stretching routine.

Participant Preparation: Please wear loose, comfortable clothing (no jeans) and bring a beach towel or small blanket. If you have the following (optional) items, please bring them to class: yoga mat, yoga brick, and/or yoga strap.

Description: Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. Balance, breathing, grace, and greater awareness of self and surroundings are typical outcomes of regular yoga practice. Hatha yoga means yoga for health, the physical aspects of yoga. Hatha yoga uses physical poses to explore the inner structures of the body, the mind, and the self. Each pose is a means to feel inwardly, to discover where you are strong, tight, weak, or dull. Hatha yoga provides the framework for the experiences of physical, mental, and spiritual wholeness. Anyone can experience the benefits of yoga by just practicing the poses. The means to physical, mental, and spiritual wholeness is your own body in the poses and your own willingness to observe closely how you feel.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Perform beginning yoga sequences in lying, seated and standing postures
  • Increase their flexibility
  • Describe how their awareness of their own body has changed through the course
  • Select poses for home practice to achieve stress reduction, relaxation, or energize themselves.

Instructor: Dawn Dougherty is a massage therapist, yoga instructor and meditation teacher. She received her massage training at Centerpoint Massage & Shiatsu Therapy School and her yoga training through the Yoga Center of Minneapolis. Since 1995, Dawn has been a trainer, educator and researcher working to end domestic violence and sexual assault. She currently works part-time as a bodyworker and part-time as the National Project Director at WATCH, a court monitoring and research organization. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Dawn moved to Minneapolis in 2004 after ten years in Boston.
