But now Spas are the fourth largest leisure industry, with revenues of 12.3 billion in 2009, compared to $5 billion in 1999. The source of this information is the International SPA Association’s (ISPA) recently released 2010 U.S. Spa Industry Study. It’s a great time to get educated in spa techniques, as spas have become the largest employers of massage and bodywork therapists in the U.S. While the spa industry continues to grow and take care of people offering them health and wellness, so do the job openings for trained massage and bodywork professionals.

Spa Locations - there were 20,600 spa locations in 2009, up from 5,700 in 1999.
Visits - there were 143 million spa visits in 2009, up from 90.7 million in 1999.
Revenue – there were $12.3 billion dollars of revenue in 2009, more than double the amount in 1999, which was $5 billion.
Employees - as May 2010, there were 332,000 total employees, compared to over a decade ago when there were 151,000 employee in 1999.
