Changes Are Coming to MN Highway 100 – Our Neighbor to the West

29 May 2015

The neighborhood around our Minneapolis massage school is changing! Currently, Minnesota Highway 100 is undergoing a $60M improvement project.  Changes are planned to enhance safety and improve accessibility and mobility by widening the road to include three lanes in each direction. Construction is scheduled to be completed in November 2016. Portions of the highway are scheduled to be closed throughout the construction period, and this will affect our massage and shiatsu therapy students, our staff, and our visitors.  This project will affect both those who drive and those who take the bus.

I2015-05-28_1221f you have visited CenterPoint in the last five years, you may have driven on Highway 100. It is directly adjacent to the west end of our building and is a major artery from the northern and southern Twin Cities suburbs.

MN Highway 100 Trivia

Here are a few fun facts you may not know about Highway 100:

  • It runs for 16 miles and goes through six suburbs.
  • Original construction started in 1935; it was interrupted by World War II and was later completed in 1950.
  • It contains the first cloverleaf interchanges constructed in Minnesota
  • The 1500 men who worked daily on the project dug much of it by hand as it was part of the Works Projects Administration (WPA) designed to employ those without jobs
  • 7,000 lilacs were planted along the highway, earning it the name “Lilac Way”
  • Five wayside parks were built along the way, two of which remain today
  • Lilac Park in St. Louis Park (just a mile away from CenterPoint) includes a restored “beehive” fireplace originally built in 1939

Recently, a car going northbound on Highway 100 swerved to avoid hitting a deer and ended up parked in CenterPoint’s backyard. Fortunately no one was injured.  So if you’re coming our way, watch for wildlife!

For our students and those enrolled in continuing education courses, as well as our visitors, if you’re coming to CenterPoint in the next year and a half, please plan ahead and leave extra time. We promise, it will be worth the trip!  If you’re planning on getting here via bus, you should be aware that certain bus routes are affected, so check with the Metro Transit site for announcements (click here).
