Fight Obesity with Massage Therapy

09 Aug 2012

Addressing many health conditions including obesity is another benefit of massage. Many studies have shown that massage helps reduce stress and can be an aid in weight loss. It can also help lessen social anxiety and lead to making healthier lifestyle choices. Being overweight causes severely painful medical conditions that cause people to seek massage for conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Recently a team of Northwestern University staff presented some startling projections to the American Heart Association (AHA).   Their research showed that by 2020 a majority of adults in the U.S. are going to be overweight, with half of them suffering from diabetic conditions.  The AHA has set a target of helping Americans to improve their overall heart health by 20% by 2020.  But if nothing changes and Americans continue their current behavior trends, only a modest improvement of 6% in overall cardiovascular health by 2020 can be expected, according to the Northwestern press release.

The study was based on patterns found in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1988 to 2008. The projected numbers on weight and diabetes, based on previous trends, include:

  • 83% of men and 72% of women will be overweight or obese by 2020, compared to currently, 72% of men and 63% of women are overweight or obese
  • 77% of men and 53% of women will have dysglycemia (either diabetes or pre-diabetes) by 2020, currently 62% of men and 43% of women have dysglycemia.

How do you measure overweight or obesity? People are considered to be overweight if they have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 15 to 29kg/m2. People who are obese have a BMI of 30kg/m2 or greater. The press release noted that less than five percent of Americans currently are considered to have ideal cardiovascular health.

Massage therapy can be helpful in increasing the overall health of overweight and obese individuals.  Contact CenterPoint Massage School on 952-562-5200 to register for massage classes in Minneapolis or to learn more about the benefits of massage.
