East Meets West in Our Unique Bodywork Therapy Degree Program

02 Jun 2017

You’ve already decided to pursue a career in a natural health care field as a bodywork therapist. Great! But you say you can’t make up your mind whether to go after training in massage or shiatsu therapy? Great!

What???

Okay, it’s not so great that you can’t make up your mind, but what is great is that with one of the training programs we have available, you don’t have to. Our East West Therapeutic Bodywork A.A.S. program combines the best of both Western and Eastern therapeutic modalities in one curriculum. Students in this program learn Eastern and Western massage techniques, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and shiatsu.

That particular training option is somewhat unique among bodywork schools. First of all, CenterPoint is the ONLY accredited shiatsu school in Minnesota. And most other bodywork therapy programs across the country focus either on massage or shiatsu. But we recognize that both disciplines have benefits to offer, and combining those therapies with TCM results in a terrific way to prepare students to serve an extensive range of clients by offering a multiplicity of skills.

Another great advantage of this program is that students will earn an associate of applied science. And as more and more hospitals and other medical facilities are adding bodywork therapists to their staff (or at least to their treatment protocols), a degree will definitely be a plus for our grads seeking employment in those kinds of settings. And the training will prepare them to be able to interact meaningfully with other health care professionals such as doctors and nurses who may be involved in a client’s health care plan.

Another benefit of this type of training is that an East-West bodywork therapist is able to combine elements of both approaches to create a customized therapy session for each individual client.

This particular degree program includes:

  • Extensive hands-on training in both massage and shiatsu therapy
  • Assessment skills from both Western and Eastern medicine traditions
  • Pathology and anatomy
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Kinesiology (the mechanics of body movement)
  • Hands-on clinical practice in our Student Clinic, both with shiatsu and massage

In addition, the seven elective courses available allow the student to customize their education to their particular interests. These include such courses as reflexology and even birth doula training.
