Swedish massage is just one of the many types available in the repertoire of bodywork professionals. Many people have heard the term but might not know what is involved with Swedish massage. What is it, and what does it involve? According to Kurre W. Ostrom in Massage and the Original Swedish Movement, “The aim of the Swedish treatment is, by a careful manipulation of muscles and joints, to restore to good health such as are in any way diseased.”Swedish massage came to the West through a Swede named Pir Henrik Ling (1776-1839). Ling developed a combined system of massage and exercise ...
Massages actually do provide benefits that are more skin deep; they go beyond just relaxing your muscles. The researchers in this study of 53 healthy adults found massage therapy can offer biological changes in the body. The study was conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. They randomly assigned the participants into two groups. One group enjoyed a 45 deep-tissue Swedish massage and the other group of 24 participants only got a light massage session. Both groups had blood samples drawn by intravenous catheters immediately after the massage and than one hour later. The group with the Swedish massages experienced decreases ...
A study published by the International Journal of Neuroscience said that moderate pressure is essential if therapists are going to achieve optimal physical and physiological benefits. “Moderate pressure massage leads to (an) increased natural killer (NK) cell number and NK cell activity,” according to the Tiffany Field, PhD, the study’s author and director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School. Field says moderate pressure massage enhances the immune system. Researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles compared a single session of moderate pressure Swedish massage to light touch massage. They found the difference to be ...
Learn Lymphatic Drainage Massage over a series of Mondays. Each Monday builds on the next until you have a total approach to the lymphatic system.
This hands on training will cover lymphatic drainage massage. It is known for its light-touch manual approach that moves excess lymphatic fluid (edema), which often represents itself as swelling, through gentle, repetitive, slow movements that improve congestive conditions. Lymph drainage massage brings the edema to an area in the body where the fluid can drain back into the body and be processed.
Dr. Emil Vodder, a Danish massage therapist and his wife Estrid, developed it ...
Significant implications as cortisol decreases and white blood cells in the immune system increase.
Until recently little was known about what the effects were of a single massage on a person. A study was conducted to determine what the benefits of a single session of Swedish massage would be on the neuroendocrine (hormones and nervous system) and immune function of a healthy person.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles recruited 53 healthy adults and randomly assigned 29 of them to a 45-minute session of deep-tissue Swedish massage and the other 24 to a session of light massage. All ...

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage developed in the 18th century in Sweden. A Swedish man, Per Henrik Ling, developed Swedish massage and introduced it into the U.S. in 1858 as “The Swedish Movement Cure”. He created his system by combining his knowledge of gymnastics, and physiology and from Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman techniques. It is a full body massage that uses a combination of long strokes, kneading motions, friction, stretching, and sometimes tapping on the layers of tissue against one another. It is used to increase blood flow to the area.
