Comparing Massage and Shiatsu Therapy

31 May 2017

At our Minneapolis bodywork school, we have courses in both massage and shiatsu therapy. Most people know a fair amount about massage, but shiatsu is not as well-known here in the United States. As the first and only shiatsu school in Minnesota, we thought it might be helpful to share a little bit about the similarities as well as the differences between these two bodywork modalities. [caption id="attachment_11007" align="alignright" width="300"] Co-founder Cari Jackson Pelava, instructing a shiatsu class[/caption] First, some of the similarities.   Both massage and shiatsu are techniques that manipulate or work the body with the goal being ...

Spotlight on Our Faculty: An Interview with Massage Instructor Krisha Crabtree

01 May 2017

We figure we've done a good job in providing excellent training at our Minneapolis massage school when one of our graduates returns as a faculty member.  Today's post is a spotlight on one of those students-cum-teachers, Krisha Crabtree. We recently talked with her about her background as well as the some of the courses she teaches at CenterPoint (including Swedish Massage Foundations, for our beginning massage students, and Arm & Hand Massage, a free class open to the public).  In this post we'll learn some things about Krisha, and in an upcoming post she'll talk about her foundational Swedish massage class. ...

The Prospect of Minnesota Licensing and the Future for Our Massage School Graduates

17 Mar 2017

The State of Minnesota is currently one of the few in the nation not requiring licensing for massage therapists. According to the ABMP, licensing is required in 43 other states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, in Minnesota many local communities require licenses, and the issue is before the state legislature.   All this may be of concern to those who have graduated from our Minneapolis massage school. But whatever the outcome of the pending Minnesota legislation, we'd like to reassure you that your degree or diploma from our school is more than ...

Choose Customized Bodywork Training at Our Minnesota Massage & Shiatsu Therapy School

19 Dec 2016

Have you thought, even briefly, about a career in bodywork like massage or shiatsu? Employment opportunities in the health care field (especially natural health care) are expanding, and this is a great time to take advantage of a trend that shows no signs it will change.  And one fast-growing field is bodywork, most particularly massage. "There is currently a shortage of massage therapists. Because of this, the pay scales are increasing.  It is not uncommon for someone coming right out of massage school to be making $35,000-$45,000 a year. That is pretty phenomenal."  - Cari Johnson Pelava, CenterPoint Co-Founder and ...

We believe our graduates are well prepared for careers in bodywork, and that includes being sensitive to trends and changes. The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) recently published their 2011 update on the latest information on the massage therapy business. A strong increase in opportunities of 19% is expected by the Department of Labor to extend over a ten-year period from 2008 to 2018. The AMTA projected that in 2011 massage therapy would represent at least $10-$11 billion dollars in business. That compares to a high of $12-$17 billion dollars in 2010.
