Bodywork Research News: Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia

18 Dec 2017

It is always encouraging to see massage therapy research news that confirms what bodyworkers know from experience and the reports of their clients – that therapeutic massage is very beneficial for pain management. Seeing research study reports on massage and fibromyalgia does give us more talking points with our clients, and it also reinforces the idea that massage is a viable treatment option for those in the mainstream medical profession.  Medical doctors tend to give more credence to scientific research than anecdotal evidence, and a study like this can go a long way in their profession.

Fibromyalgia has gotten a lot of press lately with one of the top musicians, Lady Gaga, who revealed she has been diagnosed with the condition. Fibromyalgia has come to be referred to as a syndrome, because there are so many different symptoms that may arise, and each patient is different. Estimates are that it affects over 5 million Americans, most of them women, and surveys indicate that nearly 100% of them use therapies such as massage manage many of their symptoms, including:

  • pain
  • muscle stiffness
  • sleep disorders
  • digestive problems
  • fatigue
  • anxiety and depression

These symptoms are common to many other conditions, and numerous other studies have shown the benefits of massage for addressing each of them, as well as other health issues that affect those with chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia.

At our Minneapolis massage school, we offer training in therapeutic massage. The techniques the students in our various programs learn can be used to provide natural, holistic and supportive health care for those suffering from fibromyalgia as well as most other painful conditions. If you are interested in pursuing a career in this growing field, please contact us today to arrange a campus visit. We’d love to show you around!
