The Bodywork with Cancer Patients class covers how bodywork by a trained massage therapist can be safe and provide many benefits to those living with cancer.

Cancer is the #1 cause of death in people 35-64 years of age. It’s the #2 cause of death in people 65 and older. So the likelihood is that you know someone who has had cancer and most likely have clients that are cancer survivors or fighters.

Massage therapy has become one of the leading therapies adopted to help comfort people in pain and bring them comfort. It’s now known that it actually improves the quality of their lives. It wasn’t that long ago that it was believed that massage could hinder a patient with cancer’s health. But that has been disproved and now The American Cancer Society actually promotes massage therapy as a means to help cancer patients, their friends and families.

The Bodywork with Cancer Patients class covers how bodywork by a trained therapeutic bodywork professional or massage therapist can be safe and provide many benefits to those living with cancer. In this class we’ll focus on the powerful integration of Massage and Shiatsu techniques and theory. That will help us to address the particular needs and cares and learn how to ease the client living with cancer pain. Helping them to learn how to manage nausea, improve sleep, and help relieving fatigue are other skills. You will also learn how to take the client’s history, consider contraindications and precautions and be able to translate that information into a balanced and appropriate approach blending Massage and Shiatsu techniques. Another big plus is being able to help your client strengthen their energy so they can better tolerate all of the medical and surgical interventions necessary for their cancer treatment. Blending and combining massage strokes with meridian and point balancing specific to a particular cancer patient or survivor’s situation will be the focus of the class.

Bodywork with Cancer Patients is just one of the many specialized population classes that Minneapolis CenterPoint offers. Enroll today to learn how to apply supportive massage for cancer patients and survivors, call 952-562-5200. NCBTMB: 8 CE hours

Shiatsu is a 2,500-year-old system of natural healing based on the beauty and philosophies of Japan and China.

If you find that you would like to offer some practical natural healing to your family, friends and yourself this might be the class for you. Shiatsu is a therapeutic bodywork massage that came from Japan but is based on traditional Chinese medicine that is coupled with modern anatomy and physiology.

In this class you will learn the simple yet effective Shiatsu finger pressure techniques. It is one of the main modalities within the larger profession of Asian Bodywork Therapy. Shiatsu is non-invasive, performed without oils through light, comfortable clothing, and uses soothing, kneading, pressing, tapping and stretching techniques. Shiatsu therapy stimulates and harmonizes the flow of “Qi” (vital energy) throughout the body and has both preventative and therapeutic affects. They relieve and prevent chronic aches & pains and everyday ailments. Shiatsu and Self-Shiatsu are simple and effective ways to learn how to relieve headaches, backaches, stiff necks, fatigue, indigestion and menstrual discomfort. Shiatsu also helps trigger healing. In this class you will gain experience by receiving and giving Shiatsu techniques for the neck, back, abdomen, legs, and feet.

An understanding of the basic theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Qi, Yin/Yang, and Eight Principles) will be gained as students are taught through “hands-on” training and provided with the background of why Shiatsu works.

Enroll by May 4th for this popular Shiatsu Basics class at MN CenterPoint Massage School. Come and see what students love about CenterPoint! You may want to start taking classes, workshops, or considering our massage therapist certificate programs. We offer all of the different disciplines and are accredited with all of the national certifications. Our faculty is accredited also. Call 952-562-5200 to schedule this class.
Asian bodywork techniques and craniosacral therapy provides students with hands on training, assessment, and treatment planning and an appreciation of the long term healing process of the body.

This Asian Bodywork and Craniosacral Techniques training provides students with hands on training, assessment, and treatment planning. In some people standard massage treatment strategies don’t always apply when their patterns of imbalance have become deeply established.

Chronic illnesses often represent a complex interweaving of health and pathology that demands an approach that is made with extreme care and accuracy. It must address both the gross anatomy; the organs, parts, and structures of a body that are visible to the naked, and the subtle anatomy.

Deep listening, subtle palpation skills of craniosacral therapy combined with the sophisticated theoretical and technical repertoire of Asian bodywork is what students will learn in this workshop. You’ll develop the skills to directly support and encourage areas of stagnation or difficulty while gaining a deeper appreciation for the body’s healing process “as it happens”.

Gaining hands on experience treating key structures and organ systems along with a careful view of assessment, treatment planning, and the long-term healing process is the objective. Participants should have prior training in Asian bodywork therapeutic massage. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a sheet and face covers for a face crescent, or a pillowcase.

This class has some recommended reading: Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy by Franklyn Sills, Shiatsu Anma Long and Short Forms, by Dr. Doann Kaneko.

The instructor for this course is Chandler Yorkhall, CTMB, Cert. ABT, AOBTA, received his B.A. in Biology from Oberlin College in 2000, and graduated from Centerpoint’s Shiatsu Therapy Training Program in 2004. He began studying the martial arts in 1990, and eventually developed a broad interest in body and movement related studies, including therapeutic bodywork, Qigong, T’ai Chi, yoga, meditation, and dance.

Call CenterPoint Massage School to register for the Craniosacral Techniques for Asian Bodywork Workshop at 952- 562-5200 and to review the other course offerings, continuing education or multiple certificate programs available. NCBTMB: 14 CE Hours

Cancer survivors and patients, HIV patients, athletes, survivors of trauma and abuse are all similar when they say that massage therapy plays a very important place in their lives.

What do pregnant women, athletes, geriatric clients; people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and survivors of trauma and abuse have in common? All of these special populations have been found to find the benefit of well being from massage therapy.

Cancer survivors and patients, HIV patients, athletes, survivors of trauma and abuse are all similar when they say that massage therapy has and does play a very important place in their lives. At whatever point they each may be in their individual journeys one thing comes out in study after study. Well-trained therapeutic bodywork professional can make a real difference in the quality of their lives. Another report from studies is that to treat these populations massage therapists should be uniquely trained to work with them.

Students in this class will gain that knowledge and explore both from the Eastern and Western perspective the different special populations of clients who benefit from therapeutic bodywork that addresses their specific and individual needs. Those groups include pregnant women, athletes, geriatric clients, people with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and survivors of trauma and abuse. A review of the pathology, etiology, indications, contraindications, and emotional/psychological considerations from both the Western and Eastern body of knowledge will be part of each student’s work.

An emphasis will be placed on the need to understand the special needs and considerations to create effective sessions. Each student will be guided so at the end of the training they will be able to perform assessments and create treatment plans integrating the Shiatsu and massage skills and knowledge. By the end of the course all students will have the competency of designing and performing beneficial treatment sessions based on assessment through application, from an integrated approach.

Prepare yourself with specialized training so your clients in your practice receive the help they need. Call 952-562-5200 to enroll and gain NCBTMB: 60 CE hours.

Cardio – HEART  Pulmonary – LUNGS  Resuscitate – REVIVE===CPR

This American Heart Association HeartSaver CPR course teaches basic life support techniques to use on adults. In this class participants will learn from demonstration and class participation.

CPR is a combination of simulating the breathing of the lungs and the pumping of the heart. The main purpose is to restore flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and heart until you can get the person to medical professionals.

How do you know if someone needs CPR?

No breathing or difficulty breathing (gasping)

No pulse

Unconsciousness

A couple of compelling reasons to take CPR are:

There are only 4-6 minutes after a person quits breathing, or their heart quits beating before brain damage or death can occur

According to the American Heart Association there are 7 million adults and children who experience injuries or illnesses yearly. Some of the common causes of “sudden death” include: Electric Shock, Heart Attacks, Drowning, Severe Allergic Reactions, Choking, Drug Overdose, and Suffocation.

If CPR was performed early enough the American Heart Association estimates that 100,000 to 200,000 lives of adults and children could be saved each year.

Re-training and retention of CPR learning is a major requirement. Studies have shown that memory of CPR skills and knowledge tends to deteriorate as early as three months after training, among highly trained professionals, including: doctors, nurses, and others.

The country’s #1 killers, a combination of heart attacks and accidents, claim a life every 34 seconds in the U.S.

Attendees must obtain and read the text prior to the class, and be prepared to pass the written exam with a minimum score of 84%. (The materials fee is $18.95 +tax). The CenterPoint faculty that teach the workshops have completed the American Heart Associations’ First Aid training.

Enroll today to learn how to perform CPR, call 952-562-5200 so when accidents happen you’re ready to help. NCBTMB: 4 CE

The benefits of regular geriatric massage for geriatric clients are impressive. Massage therapy helps improve the general quality of their lives. It can help to relieve stress and depression. It also helps with loneliness as they have someone else who is interested in the quality of their overall heath. Plus it helps with a major problem many geriatric clients have which is the quality and length of their sleep times.

The “baby boomer” generation knows the benefits of bodywork and massage. In the U.S. they are the largest demographic group that regularly seeks massage therapy. This means a lot of massage therapy opportunities for bodywork professionals and a good reason to seek specific training.

Shiatsu and massage blended together is an excellent way to address common muscle and joint discomforts of the older client. It also through the use of acupoints nourishes the Qi and blood. Knowing how to take a careful history and knowing the appropriate techniques for each geriatric client is very important. Since many clients have multiple medical problems that need to be considered individually and together.

Learn the techniques of how to work with clients that may need to be treated in wheelchairs or in bed. A massage therapist today may work with the family members or as part of a medical or health team that is caring for their client. The basis of the training will be based on work from both the Western and Eastern styles and perspectives in viewing this population. A prerequisite to this workshop is the completion of training in Therapeutic Massage, Shiatsu Therapy, or equivalent.

Please bring 2 sheets, one pillowcase, massage cream or lotion (no oil), and wear loose comfortable clothing.

Key factors to successful aging and your role as a massage therapist for an aging or geriatric client is the emotional, psychological, and social implications of aging. Join us for this workshop and learn how best to be a positive effect on your aging client’s well-being.

Reflexology uses reflexive therapy to clear the congestion of toxic deposits that inhibit the flow of energy throughout the body. It uses compression techniques and massage that stimulate corresponding reflexes. Your neck reflex is found on the “necks” of all of your five toes on each foot. If you have tension in an area of your neck, tension, or discomfort, you will be able to feel that congestion when the massage therapist works on the corresponding area of the necks of your toes. Your head reflexes lie in your big toes.

So your two feet represent your whole body, how? The spinal line runs down the insteps of your feet. The zones run vertically through your body, from head to feet and hands. Again, there are five zones on each side. There are also three zones that traverse your body (diaphragm line, waist line, and pelvis/heel line).

Chest-Moving down your body from your head is your chest area. For your chest the balls of each foot represent one side of your chest. In the same place on the top of your foot lie the reflexes that go with your lungs, breast, heart, shoulders, air passages, thymus gland—everything that is in your chest. Your diaphragm reflex lies across the base of the ball of each foot.

Abdomen-All of your abdominal organs reflexes is in the instep of your feet. Anything that has do to do with digestion.

Pelvis -The reflexes for you pelvic area lie on the sole and the sides of your heel and across the top of your ankles, so it’s basically your entire heel.

Limbs-There isn’t part of the foot that resembles the limbs, whereas you can see fairly easily how the head corresponds to the toes and the torso to the body of the foot. Arms and legs follow the basic structure and each limb holds the reflexes to the other limb on the same side. These are called side reflexes.

Call CenterPoint today on 952-562-5200 to register for Foot and Hand Reflexology classes.
