How Baby Boomers Are Changing the Face of Geriatric Massage

23 Sep 2013

The demographic makeup of your clientele may still be ruled by younger consumers, but older clients are becoming one of the biggest groups in the massage therapy field. Receiving proper education in treating elderly clients will go a long way to building your massage therapy practice

Massage Therapy Used to Reinforce Elder Health
Thanks to better nutrition and medical care, more members of the baby boomer generation are leading very active, healthy lives.

Rather than being frail and somewhat sedentary, an older client may arrive at a massage therapy appointment fresh from a dance class and move on to the pool for a few laps after the session is finished. More people than ever are enjoying good health well into their golden years, and they look at massage as a way to maintain the healthy lifestyle to desire. As time passes, they will continue seeking the therapy, because it works and feels good.

Geriatric Care Has Special Considerations
As you’re working with aging clients, don’t forget that regardless of if they’re in fantastic shape or not, you still need to take special circumstances into consideration. The majority of elders are on more than one medication. As you learned (or will learn) in massage classes, it’s vital to get a list of medications your client is on and have a working knowledge of how that will effect your massage session. There is also thinner skin and the natural changes the aging process brings to remember as you work. When massaging a geriatric client, there is far more that goes into it than a gentle touch.

Massage offers benefits to geriatric clients and even places like spas are taking notice. Quite a few places around the world are now catering to elderly travelers in need of a relaxing massage during their trip. Geriatric massage is a promising field which will only continue to grow in the coming years.

If you’re interested in a rewarding career in helping baby boomers – as well as those of all ages – stay healthy, consider enrolling in one of the diploma programs at our Minneapolis massage school.  If you’re a practicing bodywork therapist who’d like to brush up on skills specific to older populations, check out CenterPoint Massage & Shiatsu School & Clinic’s Special Populations classes in Geriatric Care. This class is offered each term. Watch for the next one in January!
