Aromatherapy News: CenterPoint Grad’s Products Part of Minnesota Alzheimer’s Study

02 Oct 2017

We are always pleased to see research studies support what bodywork therapists know from experience, because scientific validation can increase public confidence in natural health care modalities. But we get really excited when one of those studies is not only local but involves one of CenterPoint’s own.

Jodi Baglien

Recently a Twin Cities TV station – Fox 9 – featured a report on Health Partners, a Minnesota health care network, evaluating the use of lavender for Alzheimer’s patients. Shown in the news clip are patches and oils crafted by Jodi Baglien, a CenterPoint grad and continuing education instructor. (Scroll down to the bottom of this post to watch the video.)

Jodi is a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist as well as a shiasu therapist, and she is highly respected in the field of aromatherapy. She is the director of the Alliance of International Aromatherapists, she provides educational programs for those interested in learning to use aromatherapy products, and she custom crafts and blends various aromatherapy preparations.

Though the news report doesn’t discuss Jodi specifically, it does show her lavender patches and lotions as part of the segment focusing in the use of lavender at a residence facility for Alzheimer’s patients.  The care giver being interviewed states that they have observed the residents being less anxious and sleeping better. (The reporter also mentions that lavender patches are used at St. Paul’s Regions Hospital to help post-op patients sleep as well.)

This is significant because insomnia is very common among those suffering from Alzheimer’s. Lack of sleep can make other symptoms more intense, so anything that can help support sleep is beneficial.

The art and science of aromatherapy goes back thousands of years, but it is encouraging to see modern science confirming its effects. If you’d like a hands-on experience with the use of aromatherapy specifically to address your own moods, why not join us at our Minneapolis massage school for Jodi’s upcoming class, “On the Spot: Essential Oils for Mood Shifting.”  This exciting class is scheduled for October 29th and is open to the public. Registration is due by October 19th – click here for details.
